With the award of a recent grant, the Chatham County Occupational Safety office has partnered with Tybee Island Fire Deparment's Ocean Rescue Squad to make a third Tiralo beach wheelchair available at no charge to more beachgoers with limited mobility. By using the mobi-mats, the Department of Public Works have provided at several cross-overs, these fat-tired wheelchairs can be either pushed or pulled to bring people out to the beach, across the sand, and even into the water. The tires and arm-rests on these chairs are filled with air and enable the occupant to float safely in the ocean. These wheelchairs are available on a first-come-first-served basis at the lifeguard headquarters found at the base of the Tybee Pavilion ramp. Although reservations are not taken, you can check availability by calling Ocean Rescue at 912.786.9873.
