Whether you are new to Tybee Island or have been around for a while, the following will answer many of the questions that we are often asked:
Q: How do I initiate water, sewer and trash service?
A: Fill out the water/sewer/trash service application. The form is available online or can be picked up from City Hall at 403 Butler Avenue Monday through Friday, 7:30 am – 5:00pm and Saturday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Once completed, return the form to the Water Department at City Hall along with your deposit.
Q: How much are the deposits for water, sewer and trash?
A: For residential customers, the deposit is $200. Commercial Accounts require a $500 deposit and will be evaluated after 1 year. At that time the deposit can be adjusted to the average bill or the lesser of the two.
Q: Are there any other fee’s associated with water, sewer and trash service?
A: All new accounts are charged a $35 set up fee. This does not apply to renters.
Q: How are the fees and charges established?
A: City Council establishes fees and charges based on anticipated expenditures. City ordinances are available at City Hall for more detailed information concerning fees and charges. Also, a utility rate schedule can be obtained on line or by request.
Q: What type of payment does City Hall accept for utility bills?
A: Payments can be made on line by credit card at Cityoftybee.org. Payments at City Hall can be made by cash, check, money order or credit cards. Credit card payments can be made over the phone. Bank drafts are also available. Form available at City Hall or on line.
Q: When are bills sent, and when are unpaid bills delinquent?
A: Bills are mailed on the first working day of each month. They are delinquent on the last business day of that month and must be received by the cashier by closing. Bills received after due date will be charged a $28 late fee.
Q: Must everyone pay water, sewer and sanitation charges all year?
A: Yes, The fees and charges include an availability of service component plus a usage component. The fees and charges are structured to bring in the needed revenues to provide the needed services.
Q: What discounts are available to senior citizens and how do I apply?
A: Senior Citizens who file and qualify for homestead exemptions on their primary residence on Tybee are given ½ off the base rates for water and sewer. Application for Homestead exemption can be made from January through April 1st. All Citizens (62 or older) qualify for the discount on the recycling. This allows you to recycle at no charge. Forms are available on line or at City Hall.
