"News of the World"2021-03-05T19:00:00Tom Hanks stars in this breathtaking period drama that beckons to be seen on the big screen.
Five years after the end of the Civil War, Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks) is a newsreader, someone who travels from town to town and literally gets paid to read the news to the locals. Hence the title of this fine film.
In his travels, Kidd crosses paths at the scene of a murder with a 10-year-old girl taken by the Kiowa people. Forced to return to her aunt and uncle, Kidd agrees to escort the child across the harsh and unforgiving plains of Texas. However, the long journey soon turns into a fight for survival as the traveling companions encounter danger at every turn -- both human and natural. Rated PG 13

"The Father"2021-03-12T19:00:00Led by stellar performances and artfully helmed by writer-director Florian Zeller, “The Father” is nominated for four Golden Globes, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress. Critics are blown away by the performances of Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. “An unforgettable, powerful film with colossal performances,” says one.
“The Father” presents a devastatingly empathetic portrayal of dementia. A man refuses all assistance from his daughter as he ages. As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.
“The final scenes of the movie are among the most heartbreakingly vulnerable of Hopkins' whole career. You can scarcely believe it's him. Which is probably the point,” says another. Don’t miss this masterpiece on the big screen.

"Nomadland"2021-03-19T19:00:00Oscar-bait to the core, “Nomadland” already been named best film of the year by at least 13 critics groups, has been Oscar’s Best Picture front-runner since early fall, and is nominated for best drama at the Golden Globes.
The incredible Frances McDormand stars as a widow who embarks on a journey in her van through the American West after losing everything in the recession. Text at the beginning of the film tells us that in 2011, faced with a declining demand for sheetrock, US Gypsum shut its plant in Empire, Nev., which had been a company town for 88 years. The company closed the town and told the workers who had lived there that they had to leave, since the company owned the houses, too.
That’s all true, and many of the people who populate this moving and meditative film are real, too. It’s not a documentary, but it’s not really fiction, either.

"The Trial of the Chicago 7"2021-03-24T19:00:00After a quiet run through the low-profile critics’ awards, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” showed up on everyone’s radar screen earning four nominations from the Golden Globes, including Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Brilliant Writer-Director Aaron Sorkin’s monumental courtroom drama is based on the infamous 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and more, arising from the countercultural protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.
While “The Trial of The Chicago 7” takes place a half century ago, the film's events feel very 2020,with its backdrop of protests against the establishment, police brutality and racism.

"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"2021-03-27T19:00:00 “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” acclaimed by critics lauding the powerhouse performances of Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, is already named as one of the ten best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute.
Based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. The story focuses on Ma Rainey, an influential blues singer, and dramatizes a turbulent recording session in 1920s Chicago. Davis plays the real-life Ma Rainey, the Georgia singer dubbed the Mother of the Blues. Boseman invests body and soul into Levee, the hot-headed trumpeter who dares to lock horns with the uncontrollable Ma in a shabby Chicago recording studio where they're paid to make music the way the white bosses want it.
