[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Florence Update, 3:30PM, Wednesday

From Mayor Buelterman:

9/12 2 PM Tybee update: The 2 pm update from the National Hurricane Center is at the bottom of this message.

No evacuations have been ordered for Chatham County or Tybee at this time. Should there be a need for any evacuations, we have time to remain within our protocols for getting everyone off of Tybee in a safe and orderly manner. We discussed this issue with CEMA and National Weather Service experts this afternoon and confirmed this information.

In case you noticed City staff boarding up City buildings, that is because the City is currently implementing its ‘Opcon 3’ protocols. This includes the boarding up of City buildings, loading trucks, securing loose items in City parks and on the beach and packing equipment and records.

I would encourage you to take similar steps for your personal property this afternoon and this evening—in other words, secure loose items around your home and prepare, as the City is preparing, for the possibility of an evacuation.

Another load of sand has been ordered and will be at the volleyball court later this afternoon although we are low on bags. We have more bags coming and they will be here tomorrow.

The beaches remain closed to swimmers and will remain so until the storm has cleared our area.

We are closing City Hall’s normal operations as of tomorrow morning so we can focus on emergency preparedness and have also postponed our regularly scheduled City Council meeting that was to take place tomorrow (Thursday) night.

We will provide another notice at approximately 6 pm tonight although we may have information to share earlier than that time frame and will do so if necessary.
