The National Weather Service in Charleston is forecasting tide levels to reach 9.7 feet around the time of high tide tomorrow morning (8:00 am Wednesday morning) and 9.7 feet around the time of high tide tomorrow evening (8:30 pm Wednesday evening). Highway 80 floods at low lying portions of the road at about 9.6 feet. Tybee and Chatham Police will monitor road conditions and will close the causeway if needed. We have reached out to Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) to ensure we have a means of transporting anyone off the island should there be an emergency on Tybee that coincides with closure of the road.
The next high tide cycle will be April 18, 19 and 20 by which time the repaving and associated raising of the causeway in low spots may be complete which should alleviate this issue going forward.
